Ground Preparation and Base Work

Every stamped concrete installation begins with excavation and base preparation that accounts for the specific soil conditions of the site. The base needs to be consistent in depth and compaction across the full area, because any variation in the foundation beneath a decorative slab shows through the finished surface. Color Application

Color in a stamped concrete installation is applied in two stages. Integral color or color hardener is applied to the surface of the concrete before stamping begins. Color hardener is broadcast across the surface and worked in, adding both pigment and surface density to the top layer of the slab. A release agent, either a powder or liquid, is then applied over the color hardener to prevent the stamping tools from sticking to the surface and to add a secondary color tone that creates the natural variation and depth that makes stamped concrete look like genuine stone or brick rather than a flat, uniform surface.

Stamping

Timing is everything at the stamping stage. The concrete needs to be firm enough to hold the impression of the stamp tool clearly without the pattern closing up as the tool is lifted, but not so firm that the tool cannot be pressed to the correct depth. Border patterns in a contrasting design or color are often used to frame the main field pattern and give the finished surface a defined, finished appearance.

Sealing

Sealing a stamped concrete surface after curing protects both the color and the texture from moisture, UV exposure, and surface abrasion.
